Pregnancy & Postpartum Pelvic Floor Therapy

Your body is doing something extraordinary. It deserves extraordinary care.

Pregnancy and postpartum pelvic floor PT is specialized physical therapy that addresses the unique demands your body faces before, during, and after childbirth. It encompasses pelvic floor rehab, diastasis recti assessment, scar tissue work, pain management, and the kind of movement guidance your OB doesn't have time to give you.

Our therapists work with pregnant and postpartum people at every stage, meeting you where you are and building care around what you actually need.

Common Symptoms we Treat

We assess the full picture before touching a single exercise.

  • Pain or instability in the pelvis, pubic bone, hips, or groin during pregnancy, often made worse by walking, turning in bed, or standing. This can be related to hormonal changes and altered pelvic stability affecting joint alignment and muscle support.

  • Difficulty controlling urine during pregnancy or postpartum, including leaking with coughing, sneezing, exercise, or sudden urges. This is often due to increased pressure on the bladder and changes in pelvic floor strength and coordination.

  • A separation of the abdominal muscles along the midline of the stomach that can occur during pregnancy or persist postpartum. It may contribute to core weakness, abdominal doming, and difficulty with stability or returning to exercise.

  • Sensitivity, tightness, pain, or restricted movement around cesarean or perineal scars. Treatment focuses on improving tissue mobility, reducing discomfort, and restoring normal function and movement patterns.

  • A feeling of pressure, heaviness, or bulging in the vaginal area after childbirth, often related to pelvic floor weakness or strain. Pelvic floor physical therapy helps improve support and reduce symptoms.

  • Discomfort, tightness, or pain during or after sexual activity following childbirth. This can be related to hormonal changes, scar tissue, pelvic floor tension, or healing tissue sensitivity.

  • Pain in the lower back, tailbone, or sacroiliac joints during pregnancy or postpartum, often caused by changes in posture, core weakness, or pelvic instability. Sacroiliac Joint dysfunction can play a significant role in these symptoms.

  • Education and training to help prepare the body for labor and delivery, including breathing strategies, pelvic floor relaxation, and effective pushing techniques to support a smoother birth experience and reduce strain during delivery.

FAQs

When should I start pelvic floor physical therapy during pregnancy?

1

You can start at any point in pregnancy. Many people begin in the first or second trimester to help manage pain, improve mobility, and prepare the body for labor, but it can be beneficial at any stage.

Is pelvic floor physical therapy safe during pregnancy?

2

Yes. When performed by a trained pelvic health specialist, it is safe and tailored to your stage of pregnancy. All treatment is adapted to your comfort level and medical considerations.

How does it help with labor and delivery preparation?

3

Therapy can help you learn breathing strategies, pelvic floor relaxation, and pushing mechanics. This can support a more efficient labor process and reduce unnecessary strain on the pelvic floor.

How long does postpartum recovery take?

4

Recovery varies for each person depending on birth experience, symptoms, and goals. Some people improve in a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over several months.
